I forgot to rank this back in the day, but it was really fun. Although, you have to figure out the complexities and get enough people alongside you who know what their doing as well (more of a critique of players in the public pool than the map itself).
I enjoy this board and can't really think of any flaws with it. I might prefer to use 6 sided dice instead of 8, but that is not too big of an issue. It just makes it harder to set up a defensive position and makes one favor aggression.
This board is going to favor at a minimum medium fog.
Fun board that favors aggression. Your turn order can screw you if your turn is after a player who knows what their doing. I was pounced on in both games (by the player going just before me in turn order) before I had a chance to establish myself. There should be a mechanism in play to fix this imbalance .
Fun twist! I thought the large build up of armies might lead to a stalemate, but it didn't in either of my games.
I knock my rating down 1 star for balance though.
North America is overpowered: Units build up internally at a high pace, and its bonus is better than Europe.
To compare the 2, if we look at a situation where player 1 holds NA and player 2 holds Europe: Player 1 will get a total of 47 units on his turn (33 from factories + 14 unit bonus). Player 2 on the other hand will get 33 units on his turn (20 from factories + 13 unit bonus). Player 2 would be fooled if he thought there was anything close to parity between him and Player 1.
After analyzing, it makes sense that in both my games the player who took North America ended up winning.
I like the hordes play in the continents, but not a fan of how easily connected everything is. This makes you feel like you have to play more aggressive (cripple your opponent before they cripple you). The ships and Command Centers seem to be missing something for that added element to actually have an effect on the game. They don't give much of a bonus and don't give you a defensive or offensive advantage so most people are just going to stay away. I think with a couple tweaks this could be a great map.
I think the "Keep" version is definitely the best. "Abandon" is a little too fast paced for my liking with the early slash and burn that can take place. I like the game dynamics and features. It is not as complicated as it looks and makes for a fun game!
Think Micro Mission but its Micro Europe. Special "Wonders of the World" territories add a layer of complexity but I'm not sure they effect the flow of the game all that much.
Really good 3 player map. I enjoyed all of its nuances. The faults I see are more due to the imbalances that are at play in a 3 player game in general. If player 2 attacks player 1 in a matter that is not judicious, then player 3 will likely be able to seize control of the game. This fault is not with the map though.
Board bonuses are highly concentrated in NE. By not selecting there during random selection, you are "hoping" the other players do select the NE and fight back in forth while you sweep through the rest of the map unopposed. But if one player does end up with the NE to themselves to start, they will win. I don't like leaving so much of my fate in the hands of the territory selection phase. I would just avoid the random selection mode altogether for these reasons, although the imbalance effects the other modes as well.
Creative map and clean design. I like the combination of hordes and continent bonuses. My one critique is that it is a very sweepy map/race to be the first to get the string of eliminations. Some like this, some don't. Early squabbles prove deadly.
Very well constructed dueling board, that also fits the theme excellently - That combination is hard to do! This is some of Ozyman's best work.
Like any board if you run into a great player and bad dice...you are doomed. Most of the time bad dice can be overcome if there is also flaws to be exploited in your opponents play.
I'm a fan of big player continent maps and I like this one more than the other europe map. I feel the borders are well placed to eventually hold a strategic block of countries.
I also like the abandon on game setting.
I have changed my mind on the low rotating card scale. I think it works well for foggy games.
The island borders are still a little strange to me.
